Zumba for Weight Loss

I’ve never really enjoyed exercise. I don’t like the feeling of being out of breath, and I think sweat is gross. But for weight loss, and for overall good health, exercise is a necessity.

I’ve tried tons of different workouts — from yoga to pilates to HIIT to running. But the one type of workout that I’ve never gotten sick of is Zumba.

Zumba was one of the first workouts I ever really tried and liked. Even before I started losing weight, and still lived at home with my parents, I went to a regular Zumba class twice a week at the YMCA.

What is Zumba?
Zumba is a fast-paced dance cardio class. Classes are typically 45–60 minutes and incorporate a combination of Latin, hip-hop and aerobics moves. You can also expect to do some squats, lunges, jumps and kicks. Basically, you’re going to be moving a lot! Today, most gyms and recreation centers offer Zumba classes. I’ve even seen some churches and community centers offering them.

I’ve taken breaks from Zumba to try new things, but I keep coming back again and again. Here’s why I love Zumba for weight loss so much and how it helped me to lose 40+ pounds:

1. Zumba doesn’t feel like a workout
Zumba is like a party. It’s high energy, bumping music and packed with fun dance moves. If you like to dance even a little bit, you’ll like Zumba. It’s fun, it’s loud and you’re going to be enjoying yourself so much you won’t even know you’re burning calories.

2. Zumba burns tons of calories
But speaking of calories, you’re going to be burning a lot of them. Studies estimate you can burn as much as 800 calories in one class! You’d have to spend a lot of time on the treadmill to match that. Zumba is mainly a cardio class, but it also incorporates some strength moves.

3. You’ll feel sexy
Zumba combines Latin-style dances like the salsa, merengue and tango, so basically, you’re going to be moving your hips a lot. And while it may feel a little uncomfortable at first, as soon as you drop your inhibitions, you’ll feel sexy and free. And with your newfound sex appeal, you’ll gain tons of self confidence.

4. Zumba isn’t too difficult
Zumba can be intimidating to newcomers, but I swear it’s a lot easier than it looks. Most Zumba routines incorporate the same moves, so you once you’ve done them a few times, you’ll get the hang of it easily. Plus, the more often you come, the better you’ll get. Many instructors also give you the option to modify some of the more challenging moves as well. So no matter what fitness level you’re at, you can do Zumba for weight loss and make it work for you.

5. You’ll make new friends
Zumba is its own community, and when you’re all having fun together, you’re bound to make a few friends. I’m friendly with the regulars at my Zumba class, and it’s fun to see the same people every week, and have a good time dancing our asses off together.
